Early Life and Military ServiceIshirō Honda was born in Japan and grew up with a passion for filmmaking.
During World War II, he served in the Imperial Japanese Army and experienced the horrors of war firsthand when he was captured and held as a prisoner of war.
Debut as a Director
After the war, Honda returned to Japan and began his career in filmmaking as an assistant director to Akira Kurosawa on the 1949 film "Stray Dog." In the same year, he made his directorial debut with a short film.
