    Birth and Early Life

    Zygmunt Henryk Berling was born in Limanowa, Poland, in 1896.
    Military Service in World War I

    In 1915, Berling joined the Polish Legion led by Józef Piłsudski and fought on the side of the Austro-Hungarian army.

    He served in both the 2nd and 4th regiments, rising to the rank of platoon and company commander. In May 1918, he transferred to the Austro-Hungarian army and served in the 32nd Infantry Regiment.

    Interwar Period

    After the war, Berling joined the Polish Army as a lieutenant in the 4th Infantry Regiment.
